March 8 Sheet
Wake Forest (+1)
at NC State - Game 729-730 - 10:30am Pacific
The Demon Deacons are having a magical season. They are 22-4 overall
and have won 10 of their last 11 ACC games. Their only four losses
of the season came at Duke, at Virginia, at Maryland, and at
Marquette. They are a proven commodity on the road this year with
quality wins at Wisconsin, at Richmond, at Georgia Tech, at North
Carolina, at Clemson, and at Florida State. Wake Forest leads the
nation in rebounding margin at +10.0 per game and is #8 in the
nation in field goal percentage defense at .389!
This team is led by national player of the year candidate senior
Josh Howard (19.8ppg, 8.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2.2spg, 1.4bpg) but he is not
a one man show. Freshman guard Justin Gray has shown incredible
poise and toughness since returning from a broken jaw seven games
ago. He has averaged 13.8ppg and the team has gone 6-1 since his
return. They have only lost two games with Gray in the lineup all
season (at Duke, at Maryland). Sophomores forward Vytas Danelius
(12.9ppg, 7.5), forward Jamaal Levy (7.2ppg, 6.7rpg), and point
guard Taron Downey (10.0ppg, 3.5rpg, 4.4apg) have all progressed as
well as anyone could have hoped from their freshman seasons.
Freshman center Eric Williams (8.5ppg, 4.4rpg) gives them an inside
power presence.
NC State has been on pins and needles for several weeks now. The
Wolfpack have gone just 5-5 in ACC games since starting conference
play at 4-1. The five wins have come against Clemson (twice), at
North Carolina (OT), Georgia Tech at home, and Florida State at
home. Nothing really to write home about. This will be their third
tough game in a 6 day span. They played Maryland here last Sunday
down to the wire in a loss and then played at Clemson Wednesday
without 6th man Levi Watkins (groin injury, "?" to play
today) so all 5 starters were forced to play extended minutes in a
narrow 3 point win. They were beaten soundly at Wake Forest in first
meeting and I do not believe home court will be enough for them to
turn the tables on one of the elite teams in the country.
Wake head coach Skip Prosser has pressed all the right buttons this
season. The Deacons have owned this series of late winning seven in
a row. A win here will give Wake Forest its first outright ACC
regular season championship since 1962 and will set a school record
for ACC wins. Howard & company have come this far and will not
be denied.
