January 11 Sheet
North Carolina at
Virginia (-5) - 9:00am Pacific
Cavs have played a pretty tough schedule so far. They beat Kentucky
and lost to Indiana at the Maui Invitational. They then lost at
Michigan State in their first game back on the mainland which is
always a tough assignment. They won an emotional game at Rutgers in
which point guard Todd Billett went up against his former school in
front of a packed house. Interestingly, Rutgers probably should have
won at North Carolina early in the season but blew a big lead.
Virginia also beat a solid Georgetown team who tested Duke last
Thursday. The Cavs lost their ACC opener at NC State in
disappointing fashion. For some reason, NC State has Virginia's
number in recent years now having won 5 straight in the series.
Wolfpack also received every benefit from the officials (15 more FT
attempts) in that game.
North Carolina started the season in impressive fashion winning the
Preseason NIT and beating Kansas & Stanford in the process.
Reality checks followed in 27 point road loss at Illinois, and 17
point home loss to Kentucky. They came together for one more big win
at Florida State to move to 1-0 in the ACC but then suffered a big
blow. Brilliant freshman center Sean May went down with a foot
injury vs Iona. May was third on the team in scoring, while leading
the team in rebounding and blocked shots. He is the only ACC quality
big man on the roster. The team has gone 2-2 in last four games.
Their most recent loss was at a very suspect Miami, Fla team last
Saturday in overtime where even an 18-0 second half run was not
enough to get them a win. May's presence inside opened up so many
opportunities for other players. North Carolina is now a one
dimensional perimeter dominated team.
North Carolina is a very young team. Their top seven healthy scorers
are either freshman or sophomores. This means playing home or away
can have an even greater affect. They are 1-2 in 3 "true"
road games this season. Virginia meanwhile is a perfect 6-0 at home
this season. While UNC lacks inside presence, Virginia features one
of the best front lines in the conference. Senior Travis Watson
comes in averaging a double double. UNC head coach Matt Dougherty
would be thrilled to have any of the remaining three UVA big men on
his roster: 6-9 Elton Brown, 6-10 Nick Vander Laan, or 6-8 Jason
Clark. Coming off opening conference loss, the Cavaliers will have a
keen sense of urgency here and should have little trouble covering
this number.
