March 5 Sheet
Mississippi State
at Tennessee (+2.5) - 4:30pm Pacific
The Vols had won 6 straight games including big home wins over
Georgia and Florida. They now have lost 4 straight games including
home losses to Alabama and LSU. The circumstances surrounding their
last two home games have now changed. In last two home losses they
faced teams (Alabama & LSU) who were fighting for their NCAA
tournament lives. Although wins certainly would have been nice for
Tennessee, they were not in an absolute must win situation
themselves until tonight. Miss State meanwhile comes in with a
ticket to the big dance already punched. Tennessee clearly is the
team who needs a win more.
The Vols have been beaten to the punch by both Alabama and LSU in
recent home games. They fell behind big early on in both contests.
LSU may very well be the hottest team in the SEC that no one is
talking about. They played what their head coach called a
"perfect game" vs the Vols on Saturday. They jumped out to
a 26-6 lead and never looked back. The Tigers shot 17-for-27 from
3-point land which was a new record for Thompson-Boiling Arena. With
those recent slow starts in mind, and it being senior night for SEC
leading scorer and player of the year candidate Ron Slay as well as
senior starters Jon Higgins & Thaydeus Holden, the Vols are sure
to "bring it" right out of the gate tonight.
Miss State comes in with a 2-4 record in SEC road games. Their lone
wins came at last place Ole Miss by one point and at Auburn. They
most recently lost by 2 at second to last place Arkansas and this
will be their first consecutive SEC road game of the season. This
team can be very erratic offensively and often practices very
questionable shot selection. Leading scorer Austin only took 6 shots
in 35 minutes in last game. Tennessee matches up well with plenty of
big bodies inside and the Vols rebound well enough so second chance
points will not save the Bulldogs.
Tennessee has won 5 straight senior day games. Last years meeting in
Starkville went to overtime with Miss State pulling out a fortunate
one point win. The Vols will look to turn the tables tonight. A much
higher sense of urgency and home court advantage will spell victory
for the Vols. Take the points.
