March 1 Sheet

Syracuse (+1) at Georgetown - Game 531-532 - 10:00am Pacific
The Orangemen head into this game ranked 15th in the national polls and 13th in the RPI rankings. I do not think either ranking does them justice. They are a sparkling 20-4 on the season. Their only losses have come vs Memphis in first game of the season, at Rutgers on a 3-point bank shot at the buzzer, at UConn, and at Pittsburgh. They own non-conference wins over Georgia Tech, Missouri, and most recently at Michigan State. Head coach Jim Boeheim called this his best ever offensive team. Following their 89-51 dismantling of West Virginia on Wednesday, well respected Mountaineer head coach John Beilein said Syracuse was one of the top 5 teams he had ever faced. Clearly, this is a team to be reckoned with.

Super frosh forward Carmelo Anthony (21.9ppg, 9.6rpg) sets the pace for this team. He obviously plays well beyond his years. Sophomore forward Hakim Warrick (15.8ppg, 8.8rpg) has emerged to be one of the better and most athletic players in the conference. The backcourt consists of two promising freshman, sharpshooter Gerry McNamara (13.5ppg) starts and recently eligible Billy Edelin provides a nice spark off the bench (9.4ppg last 7 games). Senior Kueth Duany (12.3ppg) is the other starting guard and provides experience & leadership. 7 foot sophomore Craig Forth & junior Jeremy McNeil fill space inside adequately. This is an athletic bunch that knows how to put the ball in the basket and can do it in bunches.

Georgetown was on the bubble just to make the Big East tournament a few weeks ago but they have won 3 of 4 games to almost assure themselves a spot. The wins were nothing to write home about, at Virginia Tech (Hokies first game without Dixon), by 2 over Miami, Fla, and most recently a 16 point win over Providence (Friars down just 1 at half, 25 turnovers). Amazingly, Providence was the first RPI top 100 team Georgetown has beaten all season. It was also their first back to back victories since December. After starting the season 8-1 mostly thanks to a soft schedule, the Hoyas have lost 10 of 15 games, posting just a 3-4 record at home. They lost at home to St John's, Seton Hall, and UCLA during the span. They were also very fortunate to beat West Virginia here as they hit a desperation 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime or else they would be 2-5 in last 7 home games. This is just not a very good basketball team.

In the first meeting at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse won by 8 points and looked comfortable doing it. This is despite the fact they were still recovering from huge 2 point win over Pittsburgh just two days prior. This will be the fourth opponent Syracuse has faced twice this season. In prior three same season rematches (Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, West Virginia) they are 3-0 straight up & against the spread. Regardless of venue, clearly the wrong team is favored here.
