January 14 Sheet

Georgetown at Seton Hall (+5.5) - 4:30pm Pacific
I like the way the Pirates are heading into this game. They have played well recently despite losing three straight games. Their recent losses came at St John's, vs Syracuse, and at Notre Dame. In St John's game, the Hall trailed by only 2 points twice in final ten minutes of the game but could not get over the hump. Versus Syracuse, the Hall led by 9 in the first half and by 8 in final ten minutes but just could not hold on. A very controversial no-call in the final seconds cost them. In last game at Notre Dame, the Hall hung tough as a +15 underdog. They were again hurt by officiating as the Irish were called for 14 less fouls and shot 20 more free throws.

The players are just now starting to figure out their rolls and play more as a team. Junior point guard Andre Barrett has averaged 18.0ppg & 6.6apg since conference play began. He can hold is own with the best in the conference and will be the best guard on the court tonight. Freshman F/C Kelly Whitney is improving every game and averaging a double double with 12.6ppg & 10.0rpg in three Big East games. He provides a much needed inside presence. Sophomore wing John Allen (14.3ppg in Big East games) is starting to come on and junior Marcus Toney-El & sophomore Andre Sweet (Duke transfer) are both capable scorers. Senior Greg Morton has experience and physical freshman forward Eric Davis (just became healthy 6 games ago) gives head coach Orr another option to throw at G'town big men.

Seton Hall by all means were in road games at St John's and Notre Dame. They would have beaten Syracuse here had leading scorer Barrett not had his worst offensive game of the season (season low 10 points, 0-5 from 3-point range). They still could have tied the game if the right call was made at end of game. This is quite significant considering how well Syracuse (winners of 11 straight) played last night vs Missouri. Pirates also led Louisville at half-time and led #5 Texas at one point in 2nd half in November. They are a capable team.

This will be just Georgetown's third road game of the season, they are 0-2 so far with losses at Virginia & Duke. They have to prove they can win on the road without departed four year floorleader Kevin Braswell. Hoyas are coming off an uninspiring two point overtime win vs West Virginia that would have been a loss if not for a last second 3-point prayer that sent the game into OT. G'town thrives on pressure defense but Seton Hall has more than enough ball handling and quickness to handle it. In fact Seton Hall should thrive against it. Hoyas will have a frontcourt edge with Sweetney inside as usual, but I believe Seton Hall can win this game with perimeter superiority and home court advantage. SHU is sure to play at least some zone in this game and force G'town to shoot threes where they are just .341 for the season and .243 in road games. Hoyas head coach Esherick is nothing to write home about and his team is 1-4 ATS in last five road favorite chances. Take the points.
