Bowling Green (+2) at Miami (Ohio) - 12:00pm Pacific - Game #137-138
It is hard to fault Bowling Green much for blowout loss at Boston College last week. In addition to being outclassed by the 7th ranked team in the country they shot themselves in the foot with 6 turnovers and 12 penalties for 92 yards. This is still a team to keep an eye on in the MAC as they are significantly improved from a dismal 4-8 season a year ago. They enter this game at 3-2 with a road win at Minnesota and are 1-0 in conference play. A win here will put them in the driver's seat in the MAC East division standings. Sophomore QB Tyler Sheehan was plagued by interceptions last week but none of his throws were awful and he made several good plays. Coaches still have full confidence in him and I expect him to bounce back strong. Sheehan had displayed outstanding form in first four games despite barely winning the starting job in fall camp. As mentioned last week, a lot of the passing game's early season success was accomplished with top WR Corey Partridge missing close to two full games with an ankle injury. He is now back healthy and partners with former QB prospect Freddie Barnes to form a dangerous WR combo. Both topped the 100 yard receiving mark at Boston College. The Falcon offensive line features three fifth year seniors which has allowed the entire offense to mesh quickly. Bowling Green is averaging 32.40ppg and is going to continue scoring plenty of points all season long. Defensively, Bowling Green has had hits and misses, but they have their most experienced defense since the bowl winning squad in 2004. Starting DT Nick Davis (knee) and reserve DE Joe Schaefer (ankle) hope to return from injuries that kept them out last week.
Miami is coming off an upset win at Kent last week. They managed to hold on after Kent was stopped one yard short from a tying touchdown and benefited from several disputable officiating calls against Kent throughout the game. The Redhawks have been decimated by injuries this season. Already missing a starting OL and top three RB's, starting QB Mike Kokal (knee), best WR Dustin Woods (shoulder), and starting DT Ben Huddle (knee) were injured last week and are all expected to miss this game. Sophomore Daniel Raudabaugh will start at QB. He has seen extended time this year as a backup and has had some success, but he is erratic and is completing less than 50% of his passes on the year. Raudabaugh had multiple opportunities to win the starting job when Kokal struggled early in the season but was unable to. Defensively, Miami ranks second to last in the MAC and 94th nationally in pass defense despite only facing one top 25 passing team. This does not bode well facing the #6 passing team in the country in Bowling Green. Both of Miami's MAC wins were close and fortunate as they were outgained by an average of 47 yards in the two games. Weather will not be an equalizer with sunny skies and very little wind in the current forecast. Bowling Green is my pick to win the MAC East division and should be favored here. Take the points.
