November 8 Sheet
NC State (+6.5) at
Maryland - 9:00am Pacific
Surprisingly, after one close loss everybody is off the Wolfpack
bandwagon. It was indeed just a 7 point loss, as a fumble set up
Georgia Tech for a 2 play, 22 yard go ahead touchdown, and another
fumble stopped NC State on a drive inside GT territory. It was just
one game, and for some reason Georgia Tech always seems to play well
vs NC State. The Yellow Jackets have now won 6 of the last 7
meetings between the schools. NC State is still a very good football
team. They have been trying to prove themselves all season long and
will get a terrific opportunity to do so here today.
QB Phillip Rivers is still #3 in the country in passing efficiency.
He has outstanding vision and playmaking ability, very difficult to
stop. This guy is a winner. Freshman sensation RB T.A. McClendon is
still in the backfield. The offensive line is still doing a great
job. Nose tackle Terrance Martin is still plugging up the middle of
the line. Free safety Terrence Holt is still all over the field and
a major factor in special teams. NC State is still 9-1. Sure, they
have not played the most difficult schedule (ranked 89th), but
neither has Maryland (ranked 66th).
Maryland has been awesome in its last four games but a closer look
suggests the West Virginia & Georgia Tech wins were much closer
than the final score indicates. A rescore of those two games taking
into account turnovers and total yardage have the Terps beating WVU
25-19 and GT 30-28. Neither of which would cover today's -6.5 spread
and NC State is a better team than both. Maryland's latest two wins
were just against very bad, beaten up teams in Duke and UNC. The
Terps have battled injuries on their offensive line all season long.
Starting center Kyle Schmitt will miss another game today while RT
Matt Crawford is expected to start but his play will be limited. The
verdict is still out on Terps 1st year starting QB Scott McBrien.
They have not needed him in their four recent lopsided victories but
they will need him today. He went a combined 23-of-49 (46.9%) with 4
interceptions and 0 touchdowns in two early season losses. Even
against WVU & GT he went just 19-of-37(51.3%). In a big game
atmosphere, much prefer my money on 3rd year starter Phillip Rivers
(63% completions on the season).
This is a major respect game for the Wolfpack. NC State is a very
good football team and Maryland is simply not good enough to be
laying close to a touchdown here. The Wolfpack already have a ton of
motivation heading into this game, but they will also be in double
revenge mode. They lost to the Terps two straight years, including
an intense heartbreaking loss in the final minute last season in
Raleigh. They were in this same double revenge situation one other
time this season, two weeks ago at Clemson, and came away with a
blowout win. The Wolfpack are an amazing 6-0 ATS under Chuck Amato
as a road underdog. Take the points.
