March 8 Sheet
Alabama at LSU
(-5) - Game 799-800 - 11:00am Pacific
I do not believe there are more than 10 or 15 teams in the country
playing better basketball than LSU right now. The Tigers started SEC
play with a dismal 1-6 record that included a home loss to now last
place Ole Miss and a road loss to second to last place Arkansas.
They have gone 6-2 in conference play (only Kentucky has done
better) since then. Their only losses during the span came at #2
Kentucky by 9 points and at Auburn by 2 points thanks to an Auburn
3-point shot with 2 seconds left. Their last four wins have been
particularly impressive. Their average margin of victory in last
four games is 21 points and the last two wins were on the road at
Tennessee and at Ole Miss. LSU's last four home games have been
superb as well with an average victory margin of 20.5! They are not
just beating teams, they are destroying them.
The Tigers are a senior dominated group with three of top four
scorers playing their final season. With two more wins they will be
the first four year class to ever average 20 wins a season in LSU
basketball history. Since nine point loss at Kentucky team has vowed
to finish the regular season undefeated. That is what they needed to
finish at .500 in SEC play and ensure an NCAA tournament birth. Four
wins are in the books and the three key seniors have been
exceptional. In last four games senior guard Torris Bright has
averaged 16.2ppg, 5apg, and has shot 53.8% from the floor, senior
forward Collis Temple has averaged 14ppg and has shot 54.5% from the
field and senior forward Ronald Dupree has averaged 18.7ppg, 6.2rpg,
and shot 56.5% from the field. These guys are flat out getting it
done. The recent emergence of sophomore guard Xavier Whipple (24.7
minutes per game, 5.5ppg, 14 assists, 5 turnovers, 5 steals in last
four games as a starter) has also given this team a big boost.
Alabama comes in losing seven of their last eight road games. They
are just 1-6 in SEC road games. Something just has not been right
with this team for sometime now. They have already had too many
chances to make things right but have not been able to get it done.
Bama won the first meeting between the two teams in Tuscaloosa by 9
points but LSU was without starting big man Jaime Lloreda (2nd on
team in scoring, 12.0ppg, leading rebounder 8.4rpg, leading
shotblocker 1.8bpg). It was immediately following this game that LSU
started playing better basketball.
Tigers have just been awesome at home since early February and also
beat #1 Arizona here earlier in the season. They are 15-2 overall at
home this season. 1,000 tickets remained as of Friday, but this is
sure to be a sellout with hated rival Alabama in town & a
potential NCAA birth on the line for both schools. Adding more fuel
to the fire is that the Tide have won 5 straight in this series. Six
Tiger seniors will be playing in their final home game and will be
honored before the game. Tigers are 8-4 ATS at home this season and
are 3-0 SU & ATS in revenge situations. Look for LSU to continue
their scintillating play and win this game convincingly.
