February 1 Sheet
Oklahoma at Kansas
State (+5) - Game 541-542 - 10:45am Pacific
Wildcats head into this with a 2-3 record in conference play. All
three losses came on the road, but the only game they were not close
in was at Kansas. They have had a week at home to mull over last
Saturday's disappointing loss at Texas A&M and I look for them
to bounce back strongly in this spot. Third year coach Jim
Wooldridge has this team playing well and the program headed in the
right direction.
K-State struggled a bit in the early part of the season as they
worked on blending an influx of new talent with a capable group of
returnees. All three of KSU's top guards are JC transfers. Point
guard Frank Richards (9.8ppg, 5.4apg, 1.8:1 assist to turnover
ratio), guard Jarrett Hart (7.4ppg, 3.4apg, 1.8:1 assist to turnover
ratio), and wing Tim Ellis (10.8ppg, has provided a much needed
scoring lift) are all playing in their first season with the
Wildcats and coming along nicely. Well touted freshman Marques
Hayden (7.2ppg, 4.8rpg) has also seen significant playing time.
Three hard nosed seniors are the leaders of the team and round out
the seven man rotation. G/F Gilson DeJesus (12.8ppg) has bounced
back from a disappointing junior season to lead the team in scoring
thus far in his final year, power forward Pervis Pasco has averaged
13.6ppg, 10.0rpg, and 1.4bpg in his last ten games, and F/C Matt
Siebrandt (9.4ppg) is a heady and capable inside scorer.
OU is a solid team but their road games have been nothing to write
home about. They needed a near miracle to force overtime in their
last trip to Manhattan two seasons ago. 6-10 junior center Jabahri
Brown (knee/personal) hurt his knee in warmups two games ago then
flew home to attend a funeral. He has missed the last two games and
is questionable to play today. He is second in rebounding, first in
blocked shots, and is the centerpiece of their defense. Coach Kelvin
Sampson said he definitely will not start but could play some
spurts. Without him, OU is not overwhelming.
KSU guard Jarrett Hart mentioned above actually played 6 games for
the Sooners two seasons ago before transferring to a JC and on to
KSU. Freshman Marques Hayden hails from Putman City, OK. Both
players will surely be sky high for this game. KSU has won 15 of
their last 17 home games. Last year they won 6 of 7 at home to end
the season all vs Big 12 teams including wins over Oklahoma State
& Texas. This season they have won 9 straight home games since
bizarre home opening loss to Northwestern. Along the way they have
beaten Oregon State, St. Louis, Texas Tech, and Nebraska by an
average margin of 20.25! In their two conference home games they
held Texas Tech to 26% shooting and Nebraska to 31%. This is a team
that really gets after it defensively, especially at home when they
can feed off the crowd. With a week to prepare they will be more
than ready to shutdown the Sooners. If OU does not play an A game
they will lose outright. Take the points.
