February 15 Sheet
Georgia Tech
(pick) at Florida State - 9:00am Pacific
I still believe the Yellow Jackets are at least the fourth best team
in the ACC. After several near misses it is now or never for this
team to win a game on the road. Early in the year they led at
Minnesota for most of the game before letting it slip away late and
lost by one point. They led at Maryland in the second half before
losing by 7. They played well at Wake Forest, close game throughout,
and lost by 7. They played well for about a half at Duke. Most
recently they lost at Clemson by 2 and at NC State by 6. In both
games they fought back from early double digit deficits only to lose
in the final minute. The Jackets were doomed by 4-of-31 shooting
(.129) from 3-point range in the two road losses.
Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt has talked about the teams goals
all season long and how they still have time to reach them.
Certainly, one of the teams goals is to get an NCAA tournament bid.
Tech comes in at 12-9 & 5-5 in ACC play with six regular season
games to go. They probably will have to finish 5-1 and win at least
one ACC tournament game to get an at-large bid. If they hold serve
at home where they are undefeated so far this year, they will have
to win two of three road games at UNC, UVA, and FSU. Clearly, this
is a very critical game on their schedule.
Florida State has been a tough out at home. They upset Duke by 5
here last month and just took Maryland down to the wire on
Wednesday. However, they are still just 2-3 at home in ACC games and
2-8 in ACC play overall. Their only other win besides Duke was by 1
point here vs Clemson thanks to a favorable call at the buzzer. Fans
always get up for the UNC's, Duke's, and Maryland's, but I do not
foresee a big crowd showing up for an early game vs Georgia Tech.
Noles are coming off a tough loss and really do not have much to
play for. They have lost three straight games to Georgia Tech, and
the Yellow Jackets led from start to finish in prior meeting this
season in Atlanta.
Tech has been playing well enough on the defensive end to win road
games. Their field goal percentage defense against ACC teams (.416)
is third best in the league, and their three point percentage
defense (.323) ranks first. This is a young team but they have had
enough road experience vs better teams in tougher venues. All of
those near misses have served as learning experiences. Jackets only
need more timely shooting to get over their road struggles. With
their season on the line, I am more than willing to back the more
talented and deeper Jackets today.
