January 11 Sheet
NC State at
Georgia Tech (-3.5) - 1:00pm Pacific
As previously indicated, I am very high on the Yellow Jackets this
season. It is Paul Hewitt's third season in Atlanta and this is his
most talented team so far. The team lost a heartbreaker vs Tennessee
on a half-court prayer in a game that should have never been that
close to begin with. They subsequently lost three straight road
games at Syracuse, at Maryland, and at Tulane. The Syracuse &
Tulane losses were bad, but they did get up for the ACC game and
played Maryland tight until the very end. They had six days in
between games before hosting Cornell on Wednesday and won in a
blowout by 26. They have not left home for the last 9 days and
should be well prepared for their conference home opener. Tech is
now a perfect 5-0 this season at home which includes a 6 point win
over Georgia in November. Not only is Georgia a better team than NC
State, but Georgia Tech certainly has improved since then through
game experience alone if nothing else. This is a very young team (no
scholarship seniors on the roster) with seven of the top eight
scorers being freshman or sophomores. Home court is already big
enough in college basketball, but could weigh even heavier with this
young team.
Speaking of home court, NC State is undefeated on their own, but is
0-2 in away games. Their only "true" away game this year
was at UMass in which they lost by 12 to a very suspect Minutemen
team. As written in past write-up, NC State lost its starting
backcourt of Archie Miller and Anthony Grundy to graduation which
directly relates to their road struggles. With reserve big man
Jordan Collins sidelined indefinitely the Pack are a 6 man team.
They are coming off a big home win over Virginia last Sunday that on
paper looks impressive, however they just seem to have the Cavs
number as it was their fifth straight win in the series. Cavalier
players complained of physical play (grabbing, holding, hand
checking) going uncalled. It is apparent that when games are called
tight, the NC State defense struggles (UMass, Gonzaga). This is
another reason they will have trouble on the road as officials are
less favorable.
Once this Georgia Tech teams hits on all cylinders they will be a
team to be reckoned with. There is a very good chance today will be
the day it happens. Three of the four best players on the court will
be in Yellow Jacket uniforms. Paul Hewitt has a 9-10 man rotation to
work with, Sendek is stuck with just 6. Georgia Tech's last
opponent, Cornell, runs a similar style offense as the Wolfpack
which should benefit the Jackets. Look for Georgia Tech to be a step
ahead of the Wolfpack all day.
