January 25 Sheet
Maryland at
Clemson (+7.5) - Game 777-778 - 1:00pm Pacific
I remain high on this Clemson team. In their last home game they
managed to beat Virginia despite battling a flu bug and the Cavs
shooting a season high 59.2% from the field. Not many teams will
beat Virginia when they shoot that well. Prior to that Clemson had
lost a two point heartbreaker at UNC and in last game lost by one
point at Florida State on a controversial foul call at the buzzer.
They could easily be 3-1 in the ACC. Clemson ranks 15th in the
nation in FG% at 49.3%, they rank 12th best in the country in
rebounding margin at +7.7, they are 15th in the nation in fewest
turnovers per game (13), have made more free throws than their
opponents have attempted, and have outscored 13 of 14 opponents in
the paint.
I talked about senior point guard Edward Scott at length in previous
analysis. He is coming off arguably his two worst games of the
season as he is just 9-for-27 from the floor in last two games. He
still averages 17.2ppg & 6.5apg. He leads the ACC in assist to
turnover ratio. I look for him to get back on track today. Sophomore
Chey Christie (2nd on team with 11.0ppg) is also coming off a very
sub-par game at Florida State where he shot just 1-for-8. It is
amazing that the Tigers did so well in the game. Clemson has an
outstanding quartet of frontcourt players led by good looking
sophomore Sharrod Ford (Maryland native) who will be making his
first career start vs the Terps. Thomas Nagys, Ray Henderson, and
Chris Hobbs round out the mix. G/F Olu Babalola can do a little of
everything and is emerging as a defensive stopper.
Maryland comes into this game off two big wins over Duke and at
North Carolina. There is a good chance this will be a letdown game
for them. I really felt both Duke & Maryland were overrated
heading into their showdown last week. Duke's loss at NC State
showed that any team can beat any team in this league. Maryland is
nowhere near the level of last years national championship team.
They lost four double digit scoring starters from last year, three
of which are in the NBA right now. This years team will be lucky to
send one senior to the NBA. They are not shabby but just do not have
any players who can really separate themselves from others in the
league. Maryland is 1-1 in their two ACC road tests, losing soundly
at Wake Forest before winning at North Carolina. This is their
fourth game in 10 days, third on the road, and first second game of
back to back true road games this season (0-2 ATS in only same
situations last two seasons).
Having already lost to Duke at home, this is Clemson's last chance
of the season to get a marquee win at home. Beating the defending
national champions would be huge for this program. Clemson has
defeated at least one ranked team at home in 17 straight seasons.
They can play with Maryland and have a shot at the outright upset
making the plus points a great value.
