Air Force at San Diego State (+2) - 7:00pm Pacific - Game #735-736
I have thought highly of the Aztecs since early in the season. At first glance it appears they have been a disappointment with just a 4-4 record in conference play at the halfway mark but they have played the most difficult schedule of any MWC team having already faced the top three teams in the standings on the road. This alone gives them an excellent chance at a strong finish. SDSU has shown improvement in recent weeks going 4-2 SU and 4-1-1 ATS over last six games. Time is running out for senior guard Brandon Heath (MWC's all time leading scorer) and senior forward Mohamed Abukar, two of the very best players in the conference. SDSU is 10-2 at home this season and expects a rare near capacity crowd for this game with a special halftime ceremony planned to honor Tony Gwynn. SDSU is tough to beat at Cox Arena with a full house.
Air Force has not done well in conference play as they are now facing teams who are more familiar with the nuances of their system. The Falcons are just 2-7 ATS in conference with both spread cobers coming in home blowouts vs league bottom feeder TCU and a badly depleted Wyoming team. They are just 2-2 SU and 0-4 ATS in MWC road games, escaping with a 6 point win at Colorado State, winning on a buzzer beater by 2 at Wyoming, and losing convincingly at Utah by 6 and at BYU by 9. The Falcons narrowly escaped vs SDSU two weeks ago as they fell behind late in the game before scoring the last six points to win by 5. SDSU fell behind 8-0 in that game and did not play particularly well but the close loss proves they are capable of an outright win in the rematch tonight at home. This is a critical game for SDSU and they have had six days to prepare, while Air Force has a NCAA bid locked up and had to play Saturday plus travel. Take the points.
