UNLV at Wyoming (+5.5) - 7:00pm Pacific - Game #605-606
The Cowboys have been somewhat of a surprise team in the MWC. They are off to a 10-5 start and started conference play with a big upset road win at San Diego State, despite starting guard Brad Jones, the teams second leading scorer, going 0-for-8 and scoring just 1 point. Two players have really emerged in recent weeks. Senior F/C Darron Brown (16.3ppg, 10.6rpg in last three games) and junior wing James Spencer (19ppg, 11-for-18 from 3-pt range last three games) are starting to make an impact. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Brandon Ewing (20.9ppg) has been playing like on all conference player since the start of the season while going largely unnoticed. Wyoming always is a tough place to play. It is one of the most difficult arenas to get to travel wise, especially in the heart of winter, and teams must deal with the higher elevation, which is even more of a factor this year since Wyoming is playing at a faster pace. The Cowboys are a perfect 6-0 at home this year and have beaten UNLV 9 of 14 times in Laramie.
UNLV had won 10 straight games before losing at Air Force Saturday, but have played poorly in last two and even prior to that I believe they were somewhat overvalued. Before losing at Air Force, they were taken to double OT by a below average Utah team in Las Vegas in their MWC opener. They will now be ending a tough 15 day stretch of five games in five different cities. The Rebels are relying heavily on outside shooting so when shots are not falling they are capable of losing to anyone in the conference. UNLV starting guard Michael Umeh has been struggling through pain from a knee injury and has scored just 3 points in 66 minutes (0 for 7 shooting) over past three games. Starting forward Wendell White, the teams leading scorer and rebounder, appeared to be slowed by an ankle injury suffered near the end of last game and could be less than 100% tonight. This will be Wyoming's first home game in 25 days and their first nationally televised (CSTV) game of the season. The Cowboys have a legitimate chance of winning this outright. Take the points.
