Eastern Washington at Cal State Northridge (+1) - 4:00pm Pacific - Game #741-742
After a nice start to the season, CSUN was disappointing in two road losses at Illinois State and at Tulsa, but taking a closer look the performances were not all that bad. The loss at Illinois State was CSUN's sixth game in eleven days, and just two days after a shootout with Pepperdine. The final margin of CSUN's loss at Tulsa is misleading as it was a very competitive game for 35 minutes. Illinois State is undefeated at home and after beating CSUN won on the road at St John's. Tulsa is also undefeated at home and 5-1 overall. The Matadors are not nearly as bad as they have looked in recent 0-3 ATS streak and therefore are getting extra value in this spot. They now return home where they themselves are undefeated and get an opportunity to prove themselves by knocking off a quality opponent. The Matadors have not played in eight days so they will be well rested and prepared for this game.
I still have respect for Eastern Washington but they, like CSUN, have been known for poor showings in out of conference road games. The Eagles struggled a little more than expected in 10 point win over Cal State Fullerton two games back. They even trailed by double digits in the first half and allowed Fullerton to shoot 52% for the game. In last game they were sluggish vs Eastern Oregon, winning by just 9, and allowed the NAIA foe to shoot 48%. CSUN's depth will allow them to throw three or four different defenders at EWU star Rodney Stuckey. The Eagles have no reason to be up for this game, but CSUN came out as flat as a pancake in last year's meeting at EWU and were beaten badly by 22 points. They will be out to avenge that loss tonight. The total for this game is currently set at 170 and the Matadors always do better in fast paced games. Expect a mild upset.
