November 29 Sheet

Arizona State (-6.5) at Arizona - 12:00pm Pacific
After going against the Sun Devils so many times this season I eventually developed a level of respect for them. They are not a bad football team. After winning four straight Pac-10 games to start conference play they have lost three in row, but that can primarily be attributed to the competition they have faced. Many teams will go 0-3 when playing at #9 Washington State, at #6 USC, and hosting Cal off a BYE week. Expect ASU to get back in the win column today.

Both teams head into this game off BYE weeks. ASU used a BYE week earlier in the season to dismantle Stanford 65-24. Have to give the edge to ASU coach Dirk Koetter during the extra preparation time. Arizona head coach Mackovic going through turmoil in recent weeks. Forty players met with athletic director prior to Cal game requesting Mackovic's removal for what they called unnecessary verbal abuse among other issues. Mackovic then gave a tearful apology that seemed to spark the team and they got some big plays to upset Cal. It was not long after their first Pac-10 win that the drama began to rehash. Apparently many people within the program still want Mackovic out regardless of his apology. Their was even talk of Arizona players boycotting this game. Coming off the win, the BYE week probably did Arizona more harm than good. Unlikely that they have been focused in practice with coaching debacle and no postseason hopes. The Sun Devils meanwhile will be going to a bowl game and a win here will give them much better pickings.

Did I mention that Arizona State is simply a better team? Sun Devils rank higher in total offense (37 to 97) and total defense (55 to 67). Arizona won last years game that ended with a brawl on the field. Expect the Sun Devils to take no prisoners today.
