August 27 - Week 1
NC State (+9.5) at Texas
- BCA Classic - 5:30pm Pacific- espn2
We are expecting big things from the Wolfpack defense in this
game. They were extremely young and inexperienced last season
but will be a much improved unit this year. It is thought by
many that Texas can push the Wolfpack defense around in this
game, but we strongly disagree. In a recent talk with the
media, head coach O'Cain was quick to mention that the
Wolfpcack line is stronger this year. Junior starting DT
Jeffrey Fisher set an all time weight room record during the
off season. The Wolfpack have one of the best young LB trios
in the country and one of the two or three best CB duos
anywhere. Senior cornerback Lloyd Harrison had an incredible
23 pass break ups and 7 interceptions last year and is on many
preseason All American teams. He will be matched up with and
should be able to shutdown the Longhorns only proven receiver
Kwame Cavil. There are already several question marks
surrounding the Texas offense. QB Major Applewhite came from
nowhere as a freshman last year and had a great season. But
now he will be in the pressure cooker after losing his top
receiver (4th round NFL pick), top running back (1st round NFL
pick), and most importantly 4 talented offensive lineman. Last
years offensive line was one of the very best in the country
(three were 3 year starters, 2 were NFL draft picks). Opposing
defenses were forced to overplay the run with Ricky Williams
in the backfield which made passing a whole lot easier. This
year will be a completely different story, especially in the
early parts of the season. Adding to the pressure on young
Applewhite is freshman Chris Simms who was rated #1 High
School QB in the country last year by one publication. Could
this mean a sophomore jinx for Applewhite? The Texas defense
will be improved even though they lose last years leading
tackler Dusty Renfo, however their secondary is still very
suspect. The NC State offense has been slowed by some minor
preseason injuries but can surely put points on the board when
given enough opportunities. QB Jamie Barnette, RB Rashon
Spikes, and WR Chris Coleman form a potent all senior skill
position trio. We have always been a big admirer of Barnette's
ability to improvise, run, and throw on the run. Recent wins
vs Florida State (last year) and Syracuse (twice in last two
years) has this teams confidence level high. Texas may come up
with a hard fought win on their home field, but not cover the
spread. N.C. State 1 UNIT
