November 3 Sheet

Illinois (+3) at Purdue - 9:10am Pacific
The Illini are having their breakthrough season under 5th year head coach Ron Turner.  On offense they are led by 5th year senior QB Kurt Kittner (1839 yards, 14 touchdowns, 5 interceptions this season) who this week was named one of five finalists for "Golden Arm" award.  The offense is extremely balanced with a strong offensive line and two good running backs.  They run several different formations and head coach Turner is known for his offensive ingenuity.  They are sure to have added a few new wrinkles for this game with an extra week to prepare.

Defensively, Illinois has made huge strides under new defensive coordinator Mike Cassity.  This will be one of the best secondaries that Purdue has faced all season.  Everyone is talking about Purdue's defense being a strength, but the Boilermakers have given up just 0.8 fewer points per game than Illinois has.  Illinois has held four of their last five opponents a combined average of 61.5 rushing yards per game below their season average.  With an extra week to prepare for the spread offense, look for the Illinois defense to be effective again this week.

I am still not a full believer in this Purdue team.  In their only three quality wins this season (Minnesota, Iowa, and Northwestern) they more or less "escaped" each time.  They are very young on offense with a first year freshman QB, young offensive line, and a freshman WR leading the team in catches.  They are improving with every game, but still are scoring 5.7ppg less than Illinois despite an overtime game and easier schedule.

The Illini are doing everything right this year.  Kittner is playing like you would expect a 5th year senior to play.  Anytime you get a 5th year senior QB getting points from a freshman QB, it is probably worth a play, especially in a game of this magnitude.  Illinois is the better team here and with an extra week to prepare should make that even more apparent.  Take the points.  Illinois  1 UNIT

Weekly Recap

Illinois could not have played any worse for the first quarter and a half.  The committed 4 turnovers and trailed 13-0.  Fortunately, they were able to maintain their composure and storm back for a very easy victory.  We have now won 4 straight games and are over .500 for the first time since week three.  Thanks to all who have stuck with us!
