March 2005 - Added Looks

3/2/05

Oregon (+3.5) at USC - 7:30pm Pacific - Game #533-534
The Ducks lost a heartbreaker to Stanford by 2 on Saturday and now face a must win situation tonight vs USC if they are to qualify for the Pac-10 tournament.  Oregon led for almost the entire second half vs the Cardinal before missing two front ends of 1-and-1's and having a ridiculous offensive foul go against them in the final stages.  This is a young team that has persevered through adversity this season and is still playing together and competing very hard.  With the Stanford loss Oregon dropped to 2-5 in their last 7 games but in that span lost by only 4 at Oregon State and lost in OT to Pac-10 frontrunner Washington.  That is 6 points and an OT game away from being 5-2 in last 7.  I believe this team still has life in them.  They have gotten past the dismissal of starting center Ian Crosswhite a few weeks back and are playing better basketball right now.  USC comes in 2-7 in their last 9 games and has one of the weakest home court atmospheres of any major conference basketball team.  They are 2-5 at the old Sports Arena in conference play.  The Trojans are coming off perhaps their worse loss of the season a 21 point blowout to crosstown rival UCLA and the game was not even that close.  The Bruins shot over 60% from the field.  With interim coach Saia on his way out at the end of the year it is hard to expect USC to bounce back or put forth any consistent effort.  Take the points.

UCSB at UC Irvine (-5.5) - 7:00pm Pacific - Game #529-530
The Anteaters are on a mini 3-2 run and should close out the regular season with two easy wins vs arguably the two worst teams in the Big West, UCSB tonight and Cal Poly on Saturday.  A win tonight will clinch a birth for UCI in the Big West tournament.  Irvine's home record is just 3-4 in conference games but they took heavyweight Pacific down to the wire losing by only 2 and also lost a heartbreaker here to Fullerton by only a point.  They still play very well here as evidenced by their 50-14 home record in last 64 games.  They will not need to do much against a depleted UCSB team.  The Gauchos have done well to put a competitive group on the court considering all of the injuries they have gone through.  Leading rebounder Cameron Goettsche is the most recent casualty.  He has missed the last 4 games with a strained back and remains doubtful this weekend.  Starting center Glenn Turner broke a finger on his right hand Feb 16th but continues to play although he has not attempted a shot in last 3 games.  Reserves David Kennedy (toe), Chris Moore (concussion), and Derek Rasp (lung) have all been slowed by different ailments.  The Gauchos are 3-7 in last 10 games with all three wins coming vs struggling teams (Cal Poly, Riverside, and Idaho).  They are 1-6 in Big West road games (lone win coming at last place Cal Poly).  The six losses were by an average margin of 12.6.  The Gauchos escaped with a 4 point home win over a bad UC Riverside team on Saturday in a game that went down to the wire.  That clinched them a spot in the Big West tournament.  Irvine is well coached and six points will not be enough to separate these two teams tonight.

St Joseph's vs Xavier (pick) - 3:30pm Pacific - Game #761-762
The Musketeers continue to play solid basketball since the return of a healthy Brian Thornton at center.  Both offensive and defensive statistics have been improved in final month of the season.  They won 7 of their final 9 conference games with only losses coming by 4 at Dayton in a game that they led in the last minute and by 1 in overtime at LaSalle.  They avenged the Dayton loss with a 9 point win in regular season finale and avenged the LaSalle loss with an easy 13 point win yesterday in conference tournament opener.  They lost at St Joseph's by 8 in the regular season but in that game only got 2 points in 10 minutes from an ailing Thornton.  St Joseph's is playing with a thin bench due to late season injury to John Bryant (20 mins per game avg).  Bryant was also just one of two active seniors on the roster.  Xavier has a huge advantage with the game being played in Cincinnati.  Playing here they are good enough to win.

NC State (+4) vs Wake Forest - 4:00pm Pacific - Game #725-726
Wolfpack players admitted they were looking past Florida State with the possibility for a rematch with Wake Forest today.  Wake escaped with an improbable 55-53 win at NC State on Sunday due to horrid (9-for-22) Wolfpack free throw shooting and suspect officiating late in the game.  Today Wake will be without starting point guard Chris Paul who will be serving a one game suspension for a low blow to Wolfpack guard Julius Hodge in last game.  As one of the nations best players, Paul's contributions to this team are immeasurable.  Wake only scored 55 vs State with Paul and will surely again struggle on offense without him.  State will likely be without center Jordan Collins (shoulder) for the second straight game but senior forward Levi Watkins (knee) is slowly returning to full strength having seen action in last two games, including 14 minutes in yesterday's 70-54 win over Florida State.  State had to wait an extra 5 days, but should get their marquee win tonight.

Oregon State (+11) vs Arizona - 6:15pm Pacific - Game #781-782
Oregon State looked as good as any Pac-10 team on Thursday cruising to a wire to wire win over UCLA.  This team has been outstanding at home all year and finally broke through Thursday with a quality win away from home.  Senior forward David Lucas is as good as anyone in the league and Iowa transfer forward Nick DeWitz has consistently put up solid numbers since becoming eligible for second semester.  Oregon State guards have been somewhat erratic but if they can get production from two of the top three they can compete with anyone on a given night.  This is a very deep team which should suit them well in tournament play.  Only one player played more than 30 minutes last night.  Arizona is not a deep team and head coach Lute Olson has always been outspoken about his opposition to the Pac-10 tournament.  They have not gotten past the semifinals since 2001-2002 season.  During the regular season, Arizona only won by more than 11 away from home twice, at Cal and at USC.  This line is too high.  Take the points.

Chatanooga vs Wake Forest (Over 155/Over 73.5 1H) - 4:10pm Pacific - Game #707-708
Wake point guard Chris Paul and Chatanooga point guard Casey Long played against each other in high school and have a bit of a rivalry going with Long winning their last matchup.  Both guards love pushing the ball up the court.  Both teams prefer an uptempo pace.  If both players play well, lots of points will be scored.  Chatanooga averages 73.5ppg but would be higher if not for playing in a league of mostly slow it down teams.  In Feb 19th non-conference game vs Creighton, Chatanooga gave up 100 points in a 100-68 loss on Bracket Buster Saturday.  Wake averages 84.7ppg and will definitely do their part.  The first half over (73.5) may be an even better investment as both teams score almost half of their average total points in the first half.

Oklahoma vs Niagra (Over 158) - 9:45am Pacific - Game #733-734
Niagra is an over team in its purest form.  They love to run and are not very good defensively.  Their games are averaging totals of 163.4 on the season.  They faced two Big East teams in non-conference play and the two games averaged 172 total points.  In their nine losses, the average game total is 173.66.  Points will be easy to come by for OU, as Niagra does not match up size wise down low.  OU meanwhile averages game totals of 138.4 for the season but two of their last five outings have surpassed 160.  Additionally, this OU team is not nearly as solid defensively as past versions.  They have allowed opponents to shoot .430 from the field for the season and an unimpressive .445 in conference play.  Niagra has some weapons of their own who will provide tough matchups.  Play the over.
